One of the most practical advantages of UAE residency is the ability to provide sponsorship for your family, including elderly parents.
In practice, this means that if you meet the relevant criteria, you can sponsor your parents under either a standard residency framework or, in some cases, a long-term option linked to your own visa status. However, specific requirements and conditions still apply, particularly in relation to income, accommodation, and documentation.
Can you be a sponsor for your parents?
Sponsoring parents is subject to the discretion of the GDRFA in Dubai or the ICP in other Emirates.
Financial and housing thresholds
The UAE enforces strict income-based rules to ensure parents are well-supported.
- In Dubai, a sponsor must earn a minimum monthly salary of AED 20,000 (or AED 19,000 plus employer-provided housing).
- If your salary is at least AED 10,000, you may request a so-called humanitarian permit, which requires providing three months of bank statements to demonstrate stability.
- Your Ejari or tenancy contract must specify a two-bedroom apartment at minimum to ensure parents have dedicated living space.
The joint sponsorship rule
You are generally required to sponsor both parents together. Sponsoring a single parent is only permitted with attested legal proof, such as a death certificate or divorce papers, confirming that only one parent requires care.
Sponsoring parents-in-law
A husband can sponsor his wife's parents. However, while the primary sponsor's parents may receive a 10-year visa (if the sponsor is a Golden Visa holder), parents-in-law are typically granted a 1-year residency.
Golden Visa holders are also exempt from the requirement to provide an Ejari and do not have to pay the standard security deposit in the case of sponsoring Golden Visa for family members.
Legalization and attestation of documents
Note: The UAE does not accept Apostilles; you must go through an attestation scenario.
- Attestation: Documents must be verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the country of origin, the UAE Embassy there, and finally the UAE MOFA.
- Translations: All certificates must be legally translated into Arabic by a Ministry of Justice licensed translator.
- Kinship proof: You must provide an attested birth certificate of the sponsor to prove the relationship with the parents.
- Affidavit of dependency: You must obtain a certificate from your consulate (attested by MOFA) stating you are the sole supporter of your parents.

Mandatory health insurance
- Basic vs. comprehensive: While a "basic" plan (like Daman's Abu Dhabi Basic) meets compliance for low-income brackets, a comprehensive policy for a senior with chronic conditions can easily exceed AED 20,000 annually.
- Screenings: Senior plans often include specific screenings for age-related conditions, which is essential for maintaining residency.
Step-by-step application process
- Entry permit: Apply through GDRFA or ICP portals. Allows the parent to enter the UAE or activates their status if already in the UAE.
- Status change: If your parent is already in the country on a tourist visa, you must pay the "Status Change" fee to activate the permit without exiting.
- Medical and biometrics: Parents visit an authorised health centre for blood tests and an ICP centre for fingerprints and iris scans.
- Insurance and issuance: Once health insurance is uploaded, the residency is issued digitally and linked to the Emirates ID.
Maintenance rules for UAE residency for parents
- The 180-day rule: Standard residency is automatically cancelled if the parent stays outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days. Golden Visa holders are exempt from this restriction.
- Visa hold: If you change jobs, you can place your parents' visas "on hold" via Amer or ICP centres by providing a new job offer and a refundable deposit of AED 5,000.
- Grace periods: After visa cancellation, dependents typically have 60 days to leave or renew. Overstay fines are standardized at AED 50 per day.
