British passport renewal in Dubai

UAE is a nation of many colors as considered by many. One of the largest representations of westerners in the UAE is the British with over 120,000 British citizens living in the country as UAE residence visa holders. Many British families have lived in the UAE for generations due to the quality of life and availability of English culture around the Emirates.

From English curriculums and the increasing number of UK higher institutions to a large number of UK companies registered in UAE Mainland and UAE free zones - the country offers lots of facilities that make it a second home for the majority of the British residing in the UAE.

Where to renew British passports in the UAE

You may have wondered where one can actually renew a British passport in Dubai and probably other Emirates. You can apply for it online through the government portal of the United Kingdom in the UAE. Applications from the UAE are now submitted exclusively online via GOV.UK, as paper forms are no longer available.**

There is an online passport application portal that makes passport renewal seamless once all details have been uploaded there. For expatriates considering business setup in Dubai or long-term residency, keeping travel documents up to date is essential to ensure smooth mobility and legal compliance.

The process may take just a few minutes to complete. The online application costs 86. This does not include the standard courier delivery charges.

British Passport renewal online in the UAE

To complete the online applications, follow below steps:

Step 1. Get passport photograph in advance

UK passport/visa photos must meet very specific rules set by the UK government — including size, format, background, and facial expression — or your application can be delayed or rejected. For example:

  • Digital photos must be at least 600 × 750 pixels and between 50 KB and 10 MB, and printed photos must be 45 × 35 mm in size.
  • The background must be plain light-coloured with clear contrast, and no other people or objects may appear.
  • Your face must be directly facing the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open and visible, and no shadows, filters or digital edits.

While many photo studios in the UAE are familiar with British standards, it is your responsibility to ensure the image meets all official GOV.UK requirements.

Step 2. Fill up online application for renewing the British passport

To start, visit the "Overseas British passport applications" section on the GOV.UK website.

You will be required to select the country of application and enter details such as:

  • Personal details
  • Old passport details
  • Contact
  • Home address

You should select the United Arab Emirates from the list of countries. The system will then provide you with up-to-date instructions, specific costs, and the correct address for sending your documents. If you are applying on the behalf of another person, be sure to enter that person’s details accordingly.

Step 3. Pay the fees

The portal accepts both credit and debit card payments. Once the payment is completed, you will receive instructions on how to print your declaration form (if required) and where to send your old passport and supporting documents. These documents must be sent directly to the HM Passport Office address in the UK provided at the end of the application process, rather than to the local Embassy in the UAE.

Important notes

When you are renewing your British passport overseas, you will be required to send the old passport to the Embassy to cancel it unless it was stolen or lost. In such a case, you will be required to make a police report regarding the lost document.

 Step 4. Track your application

You can track your British passport renewal application online using the tracking portal: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/track/reference

You can also opt for receiving SMS updates or emails.

Step 5. Receive your renewed passport

The portal will notify you once your new passport is issued. You can receive your passport by courier.

You should delete and then re-upload your UAE pass application. Choose the option “I have an account” and verify your mobile number and email through OTP. After that, set a new PIN number.

How long does it take to renew your British passport in the UAE?

Most applications from the UAE are processed by HM Passport Office within several weeks, but this can take longer during peak periods. You should also account for additional time for courier delivery to the UK and back. It is strongly advised not to book any travel until you have your new passport in hand. We recommend applying for a renewal 3 to 6 months before your current passport expires.

How to renew your British passport without delays

Renewing your British passport while living in the UAE is a routine step for many residents — but it’s one you should plan ahead. Keep an eye on the expiry date, allow enough time for the application and delivery, and avoid last-minute stress that can affect travel plans, visa processes, and other formalities. If you’re unsure about the correct steps, worried about mistakes, or simply don’t have time to navigate the rules, a professional assistant can guide you through the renewal process quickly and in full compliance — so you can stay focused on life and work in the UAE with your documents in order.
